What this is about

Seth Godin, one of the most respected marketers in the country, is holding a special one-day educational event benefiting the Acumen Fund. The Acumen fund is a non-profit global venture fund targeting the four billion people living on less that $4 a day. Its aim is to help build sustainable and scalable organizations that deliver critical goods and services that improve the lives of the poor. We have purchased one highly coveted ticket to this exclusive event for one lucky winner.

At its core, ActiveRain is built on sharing and collaboration; a critical thread woven into the fabric of our culture. For the Project Blogger competition, ActiveRain donated $5,000 to the CARE organization while coaches and judges freely volunteered their time to help new bloggers sustain and grow their business by learning the ropes of Web 2.0.

We believe strongly in the use of video as a medium for delivering your words, your ideas, your homes and your services to the ever increasing Internet audience. By entering the contest you and your video will become part of the growing contribution to ActiveRain that will be used to help others.

In case you have never heard of Seth Godin, (crawl out from under that rock, haha, kidding of course) or even if you have, it was a page in one of his best selling books that planted the seed for what would become ActiveRain. The original notes are scribbled on a page of that book somewhere around the office. Maybe we should find that......

Even though the challenge is to create a 3 minute video designed to promote your 'real estate' business, this contest is open to any and all members of ActiveRain. Professions other than real estate agents are encouraged to contribute as well. If you don't think your craft will be impacted by video, I think you are wrong :-)
Posted by Bob Stewart, Community Evangelist (ActiveRain) about 6 years ago
Wow! What an incentive to enter. The prizes look very good, but the best reward for us all is to get off the starting line, get the tools in place and start working to stay in the race. Thanks for the kick in the pants.

Bob - I need to put on my thinking cap.  I would love to go to New York, and I would love to meet Seth Godin.  I guess I should learn how to create a video online first.
Posted by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (512-796-7653) (Austin Texas Homes, LLC) about 6 years ago

Vickie,

That's what we really want to do, give people a reason to start thinking about video and how it will impact the industry. You are welcome :-)

Jason,

I posted one of my kid so it can't be that hard. (truth be told, I have very little technical skill) I'm pretty sure you can figure it out :-)

Posted by Bob Stewart, Community Evangelist (ActiveRain) about 6 years ago
Bob - I'm sure it's not that difficult.  It's just a matter of doing it.  I hope you're having a great week!

ok...looks like it's put up or shut up time! I have been harping about web 2.0 for a while now and I can't wait to see what i can do to make something like this work!

Definitely parking my okole here to see what happens.  This should get interesting.  Can we opt for the cash instead... I don't think I want to go to NY for 2 days.  ;)   ... as if!

Looks like we are going to see an increase in video blogs.  I guess I am going to have to keep my computer on mute when scrolling the blogs.  Might hear more than one at a time.
Posted by Jimmy McCall, The Ex-Mortgage Consultant (TheHappyCottage.com) about 6 years ago

Jimmy,

We'll make a really hard push to make sure people are not having their videos 'auto start'. Right now we ask that people don't do that so there isn't voices running over voices.

What a great way to push so many of us that are sitting on the fence about making videos.  If I'm not in the contest I will at the very least watch the entries...it will be a valuable learning process for all of us on AR!

Posted by Desiree Daniels (RE/MAX Tri County) about 6 years ago
It can be rated whatever you want. I wouldn't imagine you would want to end up like Paris Hilton, but hey, what do I know........

This certainly will be a great tool for all of us to learn.

This is going to be fun to watch.  I already sent an email to a fellow AR who I just KNOW can ace this.  I can already imagine who some of the participants are going to be.

I'm not ready for doing video but I will certainly learn a thing or two from following this contest.  Kudos to you guys for doing this.

Bob, like many of those above me here on the list of commenters, I want to say thanks, not for the contest, but for the realization, awareness, and forward thinking to bring to the front the power of video. We have already begun doing some video and see the power of it. I look forward to getting more ideas from all the other Rainers!

All I want to know is who stole my "to do" list for this year and decided to turn them into ActiveRain contest to get me motivated?  First the relocation package, now using video - seriously, I was envious of some of the recent relo packages with video in them and had decided to jump learning to effectively use video to the top of the list, maybe I'll get going in time to enter.  AR rocks!

Posted by Jeff Link, "Your Asheville Real Estate Link" (Exit Realty Vistas) about 6 years ago

Danny,

It's open to everyone. Not just realtors. Video is going to be a big deal for loan professionals, stagers, inspectors, everyone. It's the natural progression of how people want their information delivered on the internet.

Posted by Bob Stewart, Community Evangelist (ActiveRain) about 6 years ago

Jeff,

We thought about allowing people to enter a series but felt like maybe it would discourage those that have yet to get started doing video. Pick your best entry :-)

Posted by Bob Stewart, Community Evangelist (ActiveRain) about 6 years ago

Bob - having just discovered that the current featured video, vimeo, tries to set cookies on our computer when we don't even click on the video or frame, I'm wondering - is there a list anywhere of which video sites do set (or try to) cookies and which ones don't?

I'd like to try putting together a video but really, really don't want one that will put cookies on the computers of any clients or visitors, unless they knowingly choose them.

Hey Bob! I'm not sure we have enough interest in the contest to continue :)

I think Patrick should enter the contest.

Rudy,

I saw you write about Patrick over on the trulia blog.......you'll probably have more influence over him than I would :-)

The prize isn't bad, he should fire in an entry :-)

Wondering if I can do this with my Blackberry . . . Hmmm . . . might not be quite up to the challenge yet!
Posted by Robin Sherman about 6 years ago

I just added this to the original post:

EDITED: 3000 points for the first person to submit their entry

I have this feeling there a few of you out there sitting on your entry to wait and see what other people are going to do, so let's see if I can give you a little push :-)

Posted by Bob Stewart, Community Evangelist (ActiveRain) about 6 years ago

What? This again .... I was hoping for more pictures of your son  : )

Nice about the 3000 pts.

Interesting challenge.  Love to consider but too many projects on my desk at the moment!  I'll get ready for the next round.  Great offer and well worth the trip!

Bob, what a great idea, we have been using a flip video in our home inspections for a while and we love it.  Thanks for the push to get creative.

Hey Bob, How does one without a a video make a video?  I need to win a flip camera to make my video!!!  I think maybe my digital camera has capability of making one... I will have to see.
Posted by Jeremy Blanton (210 Consulting~ Social Media Advisors) about 6 years ago

Wow, looks like your judges will have to spend a lot of time surfing through the videos.

Here is the perfect chance for Stacy to perform the Subprime Mortgage Rap LOL

Seriously, Bob...this is a wonderful contest, a great way to encourage everyone to get off their butts and make this happen. I can see the headlines now: flip cameras sell out as Rainers rush to enter contest.

Before anyone lets that "fear of being on camera" stop them (we cannot all be hams like Brad Andersohn), I would encourange you to re-read the post. Nowhere does Bob say YOU need to be in the video.

The criteria IS entertainment and creativity, NOT educational, so I guess we need to put on the old Hollywood thinking cap here to try to win the first every "Rainy".

I'm in, kicking and screaming, and dripping with the fear of the unknown. But ok, I'm in.

This is a great challenge with a great prize.  Thanks for making me have the courage to finally branch out and learn how to create a video.  I have said I was going to do this before but this time I really am.  I love NYC and Seth Godin

thanks again

Wow, this sounds great.  I love Active Rain and all the information that keeps us updated on up and coming products and services!

Can you have another one after this?  I don't want to spend a day with Seth Godin.  I'd rather spend a day with Jeff Turner :)
Posted by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) about 6 years ago

This is a great idea.  I wish I learned about it sooner...only me to blame!  With only 2 days to go I don't know if I can do it because I, like many others, don't have a clew.  STOP!  I take back all of that negativity!  Since I attended our Women's Council of REALTORS educational meeting this morning, our topic being "The Law of Attraction",  I will rephrase my comments as follows:  I will try to do it by educating myself with the downloadable video one of our bloggers wrote about on March 13  how to shoot, edit, upload and market real estate videos.

Was this a repost? With only two days left theres no time to make a professional commercial in two days!

What a great prize!  I think I will try to put something together, it sounds like fun.

I'm mighty glad you re-posted this Bob.  Now...if I could just figure out how to work the video camera I have....LOL  Sersiously, though...this is a great contest.  Attending the Seth Godin event alone is mighty enticing. :)

Great ides, no time to do anything. 3-4 days for making a 3 minute video is a joke.

Will be looking forward for something with more realistic time frame. If you want masterpieces, that takes a bit more time than 3 days.

Good luck to participants. We would love to try, but can't.

ARDELL... @RealtorLefebvre pointed out your comment to me on Twitter, but didn't say who it was. I should have known. But you don't need to win no contest. :)

Jon Zolsky,

Sorry you missed it when it was originally posted on the 14th of this month. Even so, three weeks is still a little tight but we had to give the winner enough time to book a flight to meet Seth.

Monika,

With a whopping 14 minutes to spare, mine is finally up.  This contest almost whipped me, but I learned a lot.  This is the first time I have EVER been ready to say "I quit" after I planned to do something.  I managed to spend an entire week trying to shoot and get something halfway decent produced to post.  I have a much greater respect for paying professionals to shoot video now :)  hopefully with practice it will get easier and I am committed to using video frequently now after buying a Flip and some extremely complicated software.

Credit where due:  mine would not be up if my child had not helped me for four hours with the production last night - thanks Chris!
